Welcome to Action for Mental Health-Kenya (AMH-K), a pioneering non-governmental
organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for individuals affected by mental illness
in Kenya. Located in Kisumu City and operating primarily in western Kenya, AMH-K was
originally founded in the 1990s under the name St Francis Development Program. It emerged
from a grassroots movement led by marginalized women in Nyanza, Western Kenya—primarily
widows who had experienced mental health challenges due to societal stigma linked to non-practice of the
traditional cultural of widow. This situation was further exacerbated by the advent of HIV/AIDS.
